A great perspective on political debate
Alan found this link on MoveOn.org. This article is incredible: I now understand why our political discourse has gotten so off-track in recent years.
MoveOn.org says: For a great summary of how to frame political issues in terms of values, we highly recommend George Lakoff's most recent book, Don't Think of an Elephant: Know Your Values and Frame the Debate."
To get an overview of his thesis, you should read this
sample chapter of his book. I actually knew of (and respected) Lakoff's work from my graduate studies; until now, I had no idea he was also political.
At the least, I think everyone should read this chapter so that when we are talking about issues with people on any side of the fence we understand where everyone is coming from. More importantly, the approach can help everyone to more effectively argue their own point of view without being forced to frame the debate in the world view of others.
